A Feisty Ubuntu Installation Checklist

Ubuntu's Feisty Fawn OS was released in April this year and I was very happy to observe a noticable performance improvement when I installed it onto Michelle's laptop. Having been a Debian user from way back and with full confidence in the apt package management, I decided to upgrade my Edgy desktop straight away. Unfortunately, a couple of niggling bugs appeared.

Here is my short todo list for post-fiesty-installation to work around these problems.

  1. Install Automatix2 [1]
  2. Install multimedia codecs and Microsoft fonts from Automatix2
  3. Fix /etc/hosts to workaround slow gnome-terminal startups [2]
  4. Install scanbuttond to workaround broken usb scanner support [3]

On the whole, the most annoying change to Fiesty was the new usb system which broke my scanner. It also caused problems with Michelle's camera which took a bit of fixing. I never had these problems on Edgy.

It would be a real shame if Ubuntu developed a reputation for being unstabe. On the other hand, however, its nice to have access to the latest toys and performance improvements.
